STRENGTH GAP
If everyday physical tasks feel a little harder than they used to or your body feels softer despite not eating differently, you may be experiencing a strength gap.
In our 30s, women naturally begin to lose muscle mass, and this loss accelerates when we hit our 40s. At the same time, the hormonal changes of perimenopause and menopause make preserving muscle even more important because muscle plays a key role in supporting metabolism, blood sugar regulation and long-term health.
The exciting part is that muscle is remarkably responsive even in midlife. You don't need to spend hours in the gym to benefit. A supportive diet, regular resistance training and increased movement throughout the day can gradually rebuild strength and confidence. Many women are surprised to discover that becoming stronger doesn't just change how they look — it also improves energy, resilience and how capable they feel in everyday life.
THE SIGNS
I feel like I’m getting weaker every year.
Everyday things like lifting groceries and carrying luggage feel harder than they used to.
Exercise leaves me feeling exhausted rather than stronger.
Even though my weight hasn't changed much, my body feels softer and less toned.
I’m worried that I’ll keep losing strength as I get older.
THE SCIENCE
ONE HELPFUL ACTION
Try two short strength sessions at home this week
You don’t need a gym or a complicated workout plan to start rebuilding strength. After dinner on two evenings this week, spend just 5-10 minutes doing:
10–15 chair squats
8–12 wall push-ups
10–15 glute bridges
20–30 second plank
Repeat the circuit once more if you have time. It doesn't have to feel like a full workout - you're simply reminding your muscles they're still needed.
As you work on building strength, your muscles adapt by becoming stronger, helping to support your metabolism, improve energy, and make everyday tasks feel easier.
