OVERLOADED NERVOUS SYSTEM

Many women in midlife spend most of their waking hours looking after everyone else; juggling work, children, ageing parents, finances and a never-ending list of other responsibilities. When your nervous system spends too much time in "fight or flight" mode, your body starts treating stress as its normal state. You may find yourself feeling wired all the time, doing emotional eating, and struggling to switch off at night.

Hormonal changes during perimenopause can make your stress response even more intense, and chronic stress affects sleep, appetite, food choices and energy levels — all of which influence your metabolic health.

The goal isn't to eliminate stress completely, but to build small daily habits that help your nervous system feel safe enough to recover. Often, when stress becomes more manageable, healthy eating and movement start to feel surprisingly easier too.

THE SIGNS

  • I’m done with today’s tasks, and now I can’t stop thinking about tomorrow’s.

  • I find it hard to be fully present because my mind is always on what's next.

  • My mind is constantly racing and I find it difficult to shut down.

  • Even when I have time to exercise, I often feel too mentally drained to start.

  • It feels like my brain never gets the message that it's safe to relax.

THE SCIENCE

ONE HELPFUL ACTION

Create one daily exhale moment

Every day this week, deliberately create one moment where your body receives the message, "I'm safe."

You could cuddle your dog, sit back on the couch and listen to one favourite song, take a slow walk around the block, or enjoy your evening herbal tea without scrolling.

It is good being you, and taking 5 minutes to remind yourself of that will tell your brain that you are safe, and help reduce the background stress response that can keep cortisol elevated.
